What is a carer?

A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to a family member, friend or neighbour who could not manage themselves due to illness, disability, mental health needs, learning disabilities or addiction.

Caring can include things like helping around the home, cooking meals, cleaning, emotional support or managing their health.

You might not see yourself as a carer, but if you help someone regularly in this way – you might be entitled to support.
